Re: Needed, more detailed knowledge

All very fair points! The idea behind The Knowledge was to provide the most important kernels of knowledge that would accelerate the redevelopment of civilisation. It may well take an experience machinist to construct e.g. the pyrolysis machine, but it could take centuries of stumbling around in ign...

Re: Hello from "The Middle" (other side of "The Pond")

Hi Anonymole,
This discussion board is something I set up at the same time as the book's website, mostly to see what happens. But you're right, it's never quite taken on a life of it's own. What other options would you suggest for providing a discussion space?
Thanks, L

Re: Better index

Hi, thanks very much for your comment. The index for The Knowledge was indeed produced professionally by the publishers. For instance, with 'ash' there are four page references given, but you're right, another way of organising the material would be to provide a list of all the substances and proces...

Re: The cave children by A. T. Sonnleitner

Thanks ever so much for that recommendation - I'd not come across The Cave Children anywhere else before! I've now added it to the recommended list: http://the-knowledge.org/en-gb/best-post-apocalyptic-books/

Re: Biodiesel

Cheers Phred. Do you have any ideas on what rudimentary means could be used to provide lubricant for crankcases or valve trains?

Re: Felting

Thanks for that thought Phred. Can you explain for the benefit of everyone reading here a little bit about how you can produce fabric by felting?

Re: Childbirth?

Thanks for your thoughts. I do include some detail on child birth; talking about, for instance, the importance of cleanliness and hygiene (one of the greatest causes of problems in obstetrics before Ignaz Semmelweis) and the use of birthing forceps in troublesome deliveries. Of course, there's only ...

Re: Rulers

Fascinating post, thanks! Can you explain simply what the technique is for uniquely determining the unit of length that you mention at the end?
