Re: Money

Anyone heard of the Grameen Bank? I'm just reading about it now - it supports the poorest in society with micro loans which are too small to interest mainstream banks. Seems like a useful model to keep in mind for a world where the financial system needs rebuilding. TH - thanks for taking up my sugg...

Re: Howdy

Can I propose we start a new topic for money? It's an important subject and deserves a thread of it's own. Personally I don't see the apocalypse as something that's going to come in the future, I see it as happening now, in slow motion. We're like the frogs in a pan of slowly-warming-up water. To me...

Re: Howdy

I certainly think a discussion about money is an important thing to have in a post-apocalyptic forum! If the money system had collapsed, presumably any survivors would be obliged to invent a new one. One of the great things about being an author is being able to invent anything you like, without hav...

TV programme about nuclear energy

Watched an interesting programme on the BBC last night called "Britain's Nuclear Secrets: Inside Sellafield". Scientist/broadcaster Jim Al-Khalili was given unprecedented access to the site, which generated nuclear power and reprocesses nuclear waste. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b065x0...

Re: Building Activity on discuss.the-knowledge.org

th - thanks for your thought-provoking post! I'd like to take up your suggestion and report briefly on my project, which has some similarity to the Grandmother effect described in the book you mention. I've said elsewhere on this board that the knowledge I'd like to preserve is our understanding of ...

Re: Manchester Post-Apocalyptic Book Club

Finally made it to this book club. They're very friendly and I saw a copy of "The Knowledge" being passed around. Just one correction, they meet fortnightly, not weekly. Full details, including the book that will be discussed at the next meeting, are on the "Meetup" site.

Re: Consciousness

Strongbow: I don't think it's necessary to believe in a soul in order to study consciousness. Personally I used to think that science had discredited the possibility of a soul, even though I always wanted to believe I had one. Since exploring consciousness I now see that science and souls can be com...

Re: Building Activity on discuss.the-knowledge.org

I'm new to using forums so it took me a while to get the hang of this one. One thing I eventually realised was that I wasn't getting notified of any replies or new messages by email - I'd just assumed it would happen! In case anyone else is new to forums like me, the two steps I took that have made ...
