I am a retired civil engineering lab. technician, most of my career on hydro-electric construction sites in New Zealand, plus a few years on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, testing the concrete on the Rarotonga International Airport. Despite my work being in the field of civil engineering, the necessity to maintain or create laboratory equipment encouraged an interest in things mechanical.
