The Internet is a mechanism for giving isolated people an opportunity to interact with others.

Because of the narrow bandwidth of the channels available, as compared to personal meetings where body language, tone of voice, inflections and a myriad of other high bandwidth pathways allow for the possibility of empathy, the Internet tends to block successful team building.

On the other hand, well functioning teams in physical space can safely employ the Internet to magnify their effectiveness.

The article at the URL below describes work done by Google to try to learn how to manage groups of people well, and particularly, how to build successful teams.
