Update Saturday 2023/08/26 The course is now complete. Lessons on calculating interplanetary orbits are ready for students.

Update Wednesday 2023/07/26 at 8:09 local time 12:09 UTC: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=2195&p=4754#p4754

NewMars.com was down in mid-July of 2023, and it was restored on 2023/07/26. In the mean time, Dr. GW Johnson has agreed to offer his free course materials to anyone who might be interested via discuss.the-knowledge.org.

The course is intended to provide fundamental concepts that anyone who will become a spacecraft pilot or navigator will need to know. The course itself is NOT going to qualify a student to navigate a spacecraft, but it ** will ** provide the foundation needed for further study.

The class was implemented as a set of links to files (text and images) stored in Dropbox.com.

In addition, images were stored in imgur.com, and these will be posted to discuss.the-knowledge.org as they are recovered from backups.

Here is an opening offering:

Today's upload of files will provide links to a presentation on the Basics of Elliptic Orbits

Update 2023/07/26 .... We are seeing some progress in recovery of posts for the Class on Basic Orbital Mechanics.

The file where the posts are stored is identified, and work planned for today will pull the posts from the backup file.

The next step is to deliver them to this topic in discuss.the-knowledge.org.

The entire course is now available on Newmars.com/forums, in the "Traditional" Class topic.

However, as a backup, I've decided to copy the posts to this topic. It is in keeping with the Index level.

All course materials are offered for free. The course provides fundamental concepts and skills that a spacecraft navigator or pilot must have. The course lays the foundation for further study, including mastery of the computer software that must be used to solve three body problems in real time.

With the approval of SpaceNut, this topic is created to serve as a foundation for a class on Basic Orbital Mechanics in development for a high school audience by GW Johnson. This topic is set up for the traditional materials created by Dr. Johnson, using Microsoft Word, Excel and Paint.

As of 2023/04/01 I am working posts set up for each lesson.
As of 2023/04/20 Lessons through 4B are available for evaluation or use.

Please note that the spreadsheet MUST be downloaded so it can run on the local computer.

All materials are provided for free, and the intention is to enlist the assistance of anyone interested in helping with publicity to do so. The materials will be stored in our Dropbox account, and they will be served to students using links in this forum.

Update 2023/04/15:

For our guests who will be evaluating this course material for yourself or for others:

We would like to provide whatever assistance or guidance you need. We will be adding tips/suggestions/hints as they are recommended to us. Please use the email address shown in the Recruiting topic to communicate with Dr. Johnson or other members of the forum.

In addition, Dr. Johnson has provided direct email and telephone number in the PowerPoint presentations in each lesson.

[quote=tahanson43206]Disclaimer: a person who completed this course will NOT be qualified to pilot a space craft between Earth and Mars or anywhere else. It is constrained to the two body problem and two dimensions. A person desiring to qualify for a position as a space craft navigator or a pilot will require additional education, including the ability to operate computing equipment capable of solving the 3 body problem in real time.

A statement of positive outcomes from taking this course is in development. The course is designed to provide a foundation for further education in the space field.

A preliminary assessment of positive outcomes includes the ability to teach the contents of this course to others.

Dr. Johnson has completed lessons 5.5 and 5.5B, and enhanced the course spreadsheet to include calculations to support the new lessons.

The new materials will be available on the NewMars.com/forums site in the next day or so.

To see them, use the search tool to find topics that contain the word "class" and then select "traditional"

The class is ready for students ... visit newmars.com/forums

Search topics for "class" and select "traditional" from the list.

All materials are available at no cost. This course is intended to provide a foundation upon which a student can build toward the skill of navigating a spacecraft.

Subsequent studies would include mastery of an advanced orbit planning tool called GMAT.
