Now a quarter century old, this is a cautionary retelling of Goethe's Faust, who is this time fed knowledge at a disastrous rate. The cataclysmic mechanism at the heart of this novel is knowledge itself, empowering the darker sides of human character. Ahead of its time. Disruptive and corrupting. Human wisdom and conscience doesn't stand a chance.
The story is not contained by its covers, but spills outward. Speaking for myself, I came away with a very different view of 'progress' writ large, which I have not been able to shake over the ensuing years.
I'd say enjoy, but it's not that kind of book.
