A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World
by Charlie Fletcher
This story is set in a severely depopulated future several generations after a global loss of fertility called The Gelding.
One of two of our protagonist's dogs is stolen, initiating a hunt across former England, whose lands are rewilding and infrastructures are decaying. This makes for a world of mystery and danger. In terms of The Knowledge, it is set in The Grace Period, wherein scavenging still plays a strong role.
What sets this novel apart is the very humanity of its characters. Little is known of the their world; experiences are interpreted through engagement. They are complex, surprising and plausible.
Almost anything further I might say in description would diminish the journey.

PS. This story is often confused with A Boy and His Dog by Harlan Ellison... the similarity ends with their titles.
