If you go back really, really far. Burn enough earth and you'll figure out pottery. Burn your meat and it'll be much easier to eat. Try burning your water - you won't succeed, but it'll be much safer to drink after it's been bubbling (well, as long as it cools first). Burn certain types of earth with charcoal (made from incomplete burning of wood), and you'll find shiny specks in the ashes that can be gathered up and heated together and hammered into shape to make much better tools.
