This is the subreddit of the Living Universe Foundation. Our dream is to see humanity take life to the stars.

In NewMars.com (forum) there is a post which is following Mars around the Sun. New Years on Mars occurred on Earth day 2019/03/24. Mars has passed longitude 180 degrees in its stately progression. The calendar is now on Sol 383 or later.

If you are interested, the concept is for a participant to take responsibility for development of a virtual plot on Mars, one kilometer square on the surface, in a community called Sagan City (2018).
Participants will interact with each other to specialize in one or more of the knowledge areas which will be needed to sustain civilized life on Mars.

In addition, tahanson43206 is participating in a membership outreach campaign at NewMars forum. In an effort to build up a virtual business community focused upon Mars, messages are being send to newly registered members, inviting them to participate in the Hacienda topic.

In the past week, a variety of topics have been under discussion as usual.

The 2020 Mars Society Convention took place in the fall of 2020. There were 150 speakers, and 130 of the talks have been recorded as videos.

A discussion of the videos is underway in the NewMars.com/forums ... They are scheduled to change every two Earth days.

As of this posting, the video in review is Video #67.

The NewMars forum Administrators have closed off registrations. More than 19,478 ID's are registered. The vast majority of these were created by Spam robots. A process is underway to prepare these fake ID's for use by real people. From now on (until policy changes again) admissions to the forum will be by invitation. Existing members are invited to nominate candidates. A mechanism for applying for membership is in use. (see below) As of 2021/03/13, the third By Invitation member was added to the roster.

If a reader of this post in The Knowledge Forum would have a nomination for a person being recruited at the NewMars forum, it is possible to communicate using the Signature line of the Registration Application record of this forum. No registrations are being accepted at this time, but I do check the latest registrations to see if they are from someone other than a spam artist.

There is an active search underway for a person who has many years of experience planning and supervising provisioning of a large cruise ship or miltary vessel. This person would assist RobertDyck in planning provisioning for the Large Ship to carry passengers in the Mars/Earth circuit.

Another volunteer opportunity would be for someone willing to help to plan space missions to Mars. There is an experienced (retired) aerospace engineer in the membership. A new member with interests along these lines would be welcome.

There is a discussion underway to see if the many materials prepared for computation of spacecraft orbital missions might be developed into a tutoral that would be open to anyone interested in learning how navigate a space craft.

The US Defense Department reported a successful test of a small solar panel riding in the X37b experimental space platform. The background for this experiment was reported to be the Pentagon interest in providing power from space to remote military outposts, to reduce risks due to transport of petroleum in disputed territory.

The progress of SpaceX in developing the Starship is a popular subject for discussion.
The current version of Starship is SN11. It is in preparation for another launch and landing attempt.

The use of pneumatic tools on Mars is back in focus. The topic started with work of students showing that dry ice can be warmed to release CO2 for use as a source of force in a pneumatic tool. it is possible to test this concept on Earth, as the students have done on a small scale.

Since this is the Help Wanted topic, I'll add as many categories of assistance needed as I can think of without referring to notes ...

Large Ship - several catetories
CO/CO2-O2 machinery - several categories
Settlement Design - a new opening with many categories
Asteroid Mining - several categories
Nuclear power for Mars - several categories
My Hacienda - 7800 specializations to create a community able to re-create first tier Earth civilization on Mars

Since this is the Help Wanted post for NewMars.com/forums, I'll add an update ...

A new member is thinking about creating a new topic for defining a settlement on Mars.

The Mars Society sponsored a competition to design a city for 1,000,000 people on Mars, and multiple presentations by competing teams were included in the 2020 Mars Convention, which may be found on YouTube.

In addition, news reports in recent weeks indicate a professional (sounding) initiative is underway to design a settlement that would be built into the cliff side at a location on Mars where conditions are ideal for such a project.

The (hoped for) adventures of the little helicopter Ingenuity are the focus of great interest in the current week.

Since this ** is ** the Help Wanted topic, I'll toss in a reminder that the My Hacienda topic at NewMars is set up for those who will be moving to Mars in coming years or (more likely) will be building businesses to support those who go. The topic is set up to populate 7,800 virtual "plots" in the (imaginary) Sagan City 2018.

People are needed to select one of those plots, and then begin to build a career around achieving the ability to implement the business plan for that specialization.

From now on (until policy changes again) admissions to the forum will be by invitation. Existing members are invited to nominate candidates. A mechanism for applying for membership is in use. (see below) As of 2021/03/13, the third By Invitation member was added to the roster. The progress of SpaceX in developing the Starship is a popular subject for discussion.
The current version of Starship is SN15. It is in preparation for another launch and landing attempt.
Mr. Musk decided to skip from Test Article 10 to 15, skipping the intermediate steps.

The use of pneumatic tools on Mars is back in focus. The topic started with work of students showing that dry ice can be warmed to release CO2 for use as a source of force in a pneumatic tool. it is possible to test this concept on Earth, as the students have done on a small scale.

The (hoped for) adventures of the little helicopter Ingenuity are the focus of great interest in the current week. As of this posting, the little hellicoptr flew on Mars for the first time. A member of the NewMars forum was inspired to imagine a hovercraft would work on Mars.

I'd like to put in here a reminder that this set of posts is possible through the generosity of Dr. Lewis Dartnell, author of "The Knowledge".

It is my hope that the support provided over a number of years will ultimately lead to renewed activity on this forum, in the accumulation of actual practical knowledge.

Clearly the NewMars undertaking is about setting up shop on another world, but in the process, I'm expecting participants to master bodies of knowledge that will, in sum, allow a First Tier civilization to come into being on Mars, in habitats in free space, and elsewhere in the Solar System.

Since this is the "Help Wanted" topic I'll add a few positions/opportunities at the NewMars forum

We have 4458 ID's available for high quality new members. These ID's were recovered from the creative efforts of spammers from around the world, active over a number of years.

We have several thousand more such ID's available for recovery, and we are developing Level 1 automation to tackle them.

Level 0 automation was used to free up the 4458 ID's we have now. That level uses brute force and has no feedback mechanism. For that reason it has to be attended by a human operator who keeps a sharp eye on it.

A Level 1 automation has simple feedback that can be used to stop a run if something has gone astray. Level 1 can be used to handle expected errors. A computer language compiler is a good example of Level 1 automation. Google is an example of a software package evolving toward Level 2. It is not "there yet", but it is definitely evolving as millions of humans give it material to work on, and as it's human tenders/mentors make tweaks to help it along.

A Level 2 automation would be able to handle unexpected errors.

For NewMars, we have need of help with Recruting/Outreach

RobertDyck needs help with his Large Ship concept

Calliban needs help with numerous concepts, now including a hovercraft for Mars.

GW Johnson could use help converting a set of software and documentation for spacecraft navigation into a self-guided learning program for someone wanting to secure employment as a spacecraft navigator.

There are many other volunteer opportunities waiting for the right person.

There is an opportunity for a person trained and experienced in biological science to lead recording of knowledge about what is needed to grow trees on Mars. A new topic "Trees on Mars" was just opened, and since no one in the forum has knowledge in this area, contributions by a knowledgeable person would be welome.

A member of the NewMars forum was inspired to imagine a hovercraft would work on Mars. The idea was explored in depth, and the practicality of the idea seems low. A ground effect aircraft **might** work in the thin atmosphere of Mars, but the velocity needed to stay aloft would be such that only highly responsive computer control of flight surfaces could insure safety.

I'd like to put in here a reminder that this set of posts is possible through the generosity of Dr. Lewis Dartnell, author of "The Knowledge".

Since this is the Help Wanted topic, I'll add:

1) Need a person trained and experienced in biology or related sciences, to advise on what is needed to grow trees on Mars.
2) There is discussion of the possibility of starting a topic devoted to planning an expedition to Mars ... if someone has experience in this specialty, a contribution would be welcome.

A process is underway to prepare these fake ID's for use by real people. 4700 ID's have been recovered so far, and a new initiative to recover several thousand more is under way. From now on (until policy changes again) admissions to the forum will be by invitation. Existing members are invited to nominate candidates. A mechanism for applying for membership is in use. As of 2021/05/03, the third By Invitation member was added to the roster. That new member has created a topic: Settlement Design in Human Missions that is receiving a ** lot ** of attention, with multiple contributions from multiple members.

There is an opportunity for a person trained and experienced in biological science to lead recording of knowledge about what is needed to grow trees on Mars. A new topic "Trees on Mars" was just opened, and since no one in the forum has knowledge in this area, contributions by a knowledgeable person would be welome.

The adventures of the little helicopter Ingenuity are the focus of great interest in the current week. As of this posting, the little hellicoptr flew on Mars so well it is being given an opportunity to scout for Perseverance.

A new initiative is underway to develop a plan for a 17 person Mars landing party. The leader of this initiative is a retired scientist who is organizing teams of "triads" of complementary skills. The initiative is being support by forum management so that the main topic is reserved for the author, and a "Companion" topic is available for members to make comments, suggestions and whatever else they are inspired to contribute.

Since this is the Help Wanted topic, I'll add a few volunteer opportunities that come to mind ...

We can use help for RobertDyck's Large Ship design
A concept for Settlement Design is in early stages ... contributions would be welcome
Design of a 17 person landing party is under way ... contributions are welcome
Many more...

As of this posting, a book is available: Mars City States - New Societies for a New World ISBN 978-1-7363860-0-2

Some of the teams whose videos are included in the conference list on YouTube are included in the book. 20 Designs are included.

The folks who will be setting up shop on Mars are alive on Earth today, and most are deeply engaged in their education. The Mars Society in general and the NewMars forum in particular, provide a venue for making connections between those will be going to Mars, and those many more who will be supplying goods and services in support of the initiatives that are likely to occur in the (Earth) years ahead.

There are (by now) a couple of hundred identified needs for a settlement of 7,800 plots on Mars. We have ** no ** persons who've declared an interest in any of these, so the opportunity to pick something is wide open.

All specializations are intended to be established in triplicate so that there is competition and redundancy.
