20160208 Abundant Energy Habitat on Any Planet

The premise of this thread is that quality of life is a function of abundance of energy, materials and applied intelligence.

For many years, science fictions writers (whether for print or film) have imagined successful habitats in a wide variety of settings away from (and sometimes even on) Earth.

One scenario by Carl Frederick caught my attention recently. Frederick posits the existence of orphan planets which have been flung away from their parent stars, and which float free in space between the stars.

Frederick then describes a habitat that might be constructed on such planets several thousand years from now.

It occurred to me that the technology harnessed to live comfortably on such a planet could just as well be tested on a local planet with a suitable gravity.

An example is Neptune, whose gravity at the surface is slightly greater than that of Earth.

A civilization having mastered fusion would find plenty of fuel.

However, more pertinent to citizens of Earth living in 2016, the principles of the habitat can be tested on the Earth.

Furthermore, the principles applied and the practices developed in an Earth-based implementation of the concept would be directly applicable to the Moon, Mars and other potential locations within the Solar System.

Now we're talking!

High intensity solar power with a catalyst yields hydrocarbon chains with carbon dioxide and water as input:
