20171021 Magellan Expedition reaches the Eastern entrance to the Strait of Magellan

497 years ago today, Ferdinand Magellan and his four remaining ships and crew arrived at the mouth of what would be later recognized as the Strait of Magellan.

Visitors to the area have posted numerous photographs on Google Earth at the location marked Estrecho de Magallanes.

While some of the photographs do not appear when requested, many do, and the nature of the terrain and some of the wildlife present there can be seen.

In particular, one visitor took a picture from an aircraft, showing the Strait in light from the sun at the horizon.

On this day, 497 years ago, the four remaining ships of the Magellan Expedition are sailing South along the coast of Argentina. They reached what is now known as Point Dungeness, and Magellan named it Cape Virgenes. (1)

The icon at this location offers 12 images of the area, including penguins and a lighthouse.

From an altitude of 259 km, the complex system of bays and channels which Magellan and his crew explored is visible.

20171028 Magellan Expedition Explores Strait

On this day, 497 years ago, the four remaining ships of the Magellan Expedition are sailing Southwest and Southeast along the Strait of Magellan.

(1) Reference 10, page 70-74
(2) Reference 1, page lxi

This site gives the weather at the entrance to the Strait.

This site gives a view of the entire area, and shows rain. The format of the date field is DD/MM/YYYY.
https://www.yr.no/place/Argentina/Other ... _Magellan/

A Google search for “weather strait of magellan” gives a result of 54 degrees Fahrenheit with rain.

Google Earth shows several picture icons in and around the Strait.

From an altitude of 259 km, the complex system of bays and channels which Magellan and his crew explored is visible.

Ferdinand Magellan and his four remaining ships reached the Western mouth of what we today call the Strait of Magellan.

At the time, per Reference #1, Page lxi, Magellan named it Todos los Santos in honor of All Saints Day.

The expedition reached the Pacific Ocean one month later, on November 28. The distance traversed is recorded as 334 miles, per Reference #10, Page 74.

The expedition averaged just under 11 miles per day for the period, but their actual travels appear to have been considerably greater, due to their lack of knowledge and many side trips to try to find what eventually turned out to be the desired path.

In addition to side trips, the expedition lost time due to waiting for return of the San Antonio, which Magellan had dispatched to explore the passages around what was found to be a large island. It was during this side exploration that Spanish mutineers engineered the one successful mutiny of the voyage.

Per Reference #10, page 74, the San Antonio was the largest of the four remaining ships, and its loss was a blow because it carried supplies for the entire fleet.

During the wait for the San Antonio, Magellan sent the Trinidad's longboat to explore a channel to the West. The crew returned several days later with news they'd found the "great South Sea".

Magellan's longboats have had significant roles throughout the expedition to this point, but they were particularly useful at the beginning of the voyage, and on this occasion, while exploration of the Strait of Magellan was underway.

While searching for information on long boats of the period, I found this site, which provides historical data including images of ships constructed and used in the period of the Magellan expedition. An image of the full scale replica of Magellan's Victoria is included. I'm assuming this is the one at San Julian in Argentina.

But as soon as they reached the port, Magellan discovered the shortage of food. Angry, but not disheartened, he ordered the longboats back to Seville to pick up missing supplies.
End quotation.

Looking back all these years later, I marvel at the stamina and determination of the sailors who pulled the oars over what sound like substantial distances. So far I have not found support for the possibility that the longboats Magellan had available included rudimentary sailing capability. It is possible that every movement of those sturdy craft was performed entirely with manual labor.

Punta Arenas is reported by Google Earth at:
53 degrees 10 minutes 00.99 seconds South
70 degrees 55 minutes 12.75 minutes West

Visitors to the vicinity of Punta Arenas have stored a number of collections of photographs on Google Earth, showing scenes in and around the area. Many of these photographs provide a sense of the terrain Magellan and his crew were experiencing during this phase of the expedition.
20171111 Adam Smith Thread

497 years ago, on this day the Magellan expedition was exploring the waterways at the Southern tip of South America in hopes of finding a passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. The fleet consisted of four ships when it entered the mouth of what we now know as the Strait of Magellan on October 21, 1520. Since then, one ship, the San Antonio, left the expedition and returned to Spain.

Per Reference #1, page lxi
Begin Quotation:
November 1520: Estavao Gomez succeeds in the one successful mutiny of the voyage and together with the pilot Hieronimo Guerra takes command of the San Antonio and returns to Spain, arriving 6 May 1521
End Quotation.

And, also from page lxi
Begin Quotation:
28 November 1520: The fleet, consisting of Trinidad, Concepcion, and Victoria pass Cabo Pilar (which Magellan names Desaedo) on Desolation Island, and enters the Pacific Ocean: 'Wednesday, 28 November 1520, we debouched from that Strait, engulfing ourselves in the Pacific Sea'
End Quotation.

The quotation above includes text from the record given by Antonio Pigafetta.

In Reference #10, Nancy Smiler Levinson devotes an entire chapter (No. 6: Destined for Danger) to the exploration of and passage through the Strait of Magellan.

On page 74, Ms. Levinson describes the expedition sailing past a place now called Punta Arenas, where an island divided the strait. It was Magellan's decision to divide the fleet at the divide around this island that provided the opportunity for the successful mutiny, and the departure of the San Antonio.

From the vantage point of 497 years distance, it occurs to me that if Magellan had been so inclined, he might have invited those who wanted to return to Spain with the news of the discovery of the Strait to do so. In that case, he might have negotiated for transfer of supplies from the returning ship to the remaining vessels, and thus improved their situation for the perilous venture out onto the Pacific. He would also have defused the remaining mutinous feelings that were present.

However, as things stood, Magellan had three ships and a crew willing to travel on with him, as well as supplies of water and sardines and other foods gathered during the passage through the strait.

The expedition reached the Pacific Ocean only at most only 7 days later. I am unsure of where the “western gateway” was, so hope to find more details in future.

The Google Earth photograph set I'd like to highlight for today is:

There are 10 panels in the offering, including a panorama by Sergej Xeon.

20171125 Magellan Expedition nears Pacific Ocean

On this day 497 years ago, Ferdinand Magellan and his remaining fleet of three ships have arrived very near to the Western entrance to the passage he and his crew discovered at the Southern tip of South America, between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. On the 28th, the expedition headed out into the Pacific, taking a northerly course along the coast, before heading West.

Google reports (weather strait of Magellan): Wind and Rain 52 degrees Fahrenheit Precipitation 89% Humidity 75% Wind 24 mph

Update on 2017/11/28 On this day 497 years ago, the Expedition set out into the Pacific Ocean.

In 2017, the weather reported by Google (weather strait of Magellan) is: 54 degrees Fahrenheit Precipitation; 9% Humidity 75% Wind 18 mph

Update on 2017/11/29 The History Channel published an article and a short video about Magellan entering the Pacific on the 28th:

20171202 Magellan Thread

497 years ago, on this day the Magellan expedition has embarked upon a three month voyage on the Pacific Ocean. This voyage will test the courage and stamina of the crew, and a number of crewmen will die due to scurvy, although lack of adequate food was the root problem.

Magellan simply had no idea how large the Pacific Ocean is.

Per Reference #1, page lxi

28 November 1520: The fleet, consisting of Trinidad, Concepcion, and Victoria pass Cabo Pilar (which Magellan names Desaedo) on Desolation Island, and enters the Pacific Ocean: 'Wednesday, 28 November 1520, we debouched from that Strait, engulfing ourselves in the Pacific Sea'
End Quotation.

The quotation above is from the record given by Antonio Pigafetta.

In Reference #10, on page 80, Nancy Levinson reports:
Begin Quotation:
The fleet steered north along the coast and then headed westward into the open sea, with agreeable winds at their back.
End Quotation.

On page 81, Ms. Levinson provides a map, “Magellan's route across the Pacific Ocean.” from North Wind Picture Archives.

This post is for December 2nd. The map shows an entry for December 5th, North of a location shown as “Chonos Archipelago” and South of a location shown as “Chiloe Island”.

The image from North Wind Picture Archives is available at www.northwindpictures.com. Search for Magellan, or for image EXPL2A-00159.

The site requires registration. I deduce that Ms. Levinson must have paid the $95 per image fee.

I will attempt to find these locations on Google Earth.

Chiloe Island is indeed available on Google Earth. As usual, generous humans have sent photographs to the Google archive.

It is possible to get a sense of the terrain Magellan and the crew were able to see as they made their way North along the coast.

In particular, Manuel Arcaya Campos has saved 60 images with the tag: Faro Isla Guafo. Not all images are available.

A bit West of Isla Guafo there is a tag with images by Sergej Xeon which shows the ocean in striking lighting.

Google Earth shows Chiloe Island, and the city of Valdivia, which is located just below Latitude 40 degrees.

The map on page 81 of Reference #10 shows a distinct turn towards the West shortly after crossing Latitude 40 degrees.

The weather report for Chiloe Island for December 18th of 2017 shows 63 degrees Fahrenheit.
