2021/01/27 For Dr. Dartnell: This is a request to post announcements of volunteer opportunities in support of Building a Civilization from Scratch on another World

This web site is provided through the generosity of Dr. Lewis Dartnell, author of "The Knowledge"

In the years since I bought my first copy of "The Knowledge", I've maintained a presence here in your forum, while establishing a presence in the NewMars forum of the Mars Society (marssociety.org)

In recent months, the "powers that be" decided to give me a promotion to Moderator, and I am (of course) appreciative of the trust they've invested in me, and hope I live up to their expectations.

What is significant is that, like you, they have closed off registrations entirely. Your policy is a bit different, but the number of spam ID's you've accumulated, while impressive, is not overwhelming.

I am currently engaged in what looks to be a three year effort to recover spammer created ID's, at the rate of 22 spoiled ID's per day. At the end of the project, we expect something like 19,000 ID's to be "registered", of which about 18,000 will be recovered from spammers, and ready to be awarded to new highly vetted members. The processing of spammer created ID's is finished, and we have moved on to cleaning up debris left behind by conversion to a new forum package. That process will cover 17,000 posts, and it is expected to take until August of 2022.

Four highly vetted members have been added through November of 2121. One is a PhD student who is putting the finishing touches on his design for a new 36 bit CPU to be manufactured from low order mass produced components. The design has security built in from the beginning, unlike the early CPU designs, which were just trying to achieve working capability.

The second new vetted member is a student at a university in Mexico, who is concentrating on robotics as a career field. While his focus is upon Earthly/terrestrial applications, his knowledge and skills should be transferable to the Mars project at some point.

The third new member is a student from Germany studying in Switzerland. His interests include designing an expedition to Mars.

The fourth is a recent graduate who is looking for the right institution to continue medical studies.

The NewMars forum has three PhD level members (that I know of) and a number of participants from various walks of life.

One member is a long time Mars Society member from Canada, who as (somewhat bravely) taken on an initiative to design a Large Ship (1000 passengers and 60 crew) for transport between Earth and Mars.

The distinguishing feature of the design, and the reason I am supporting it, is the bold decision to forego use of bearings between the rotating habitat (Mars equivalent gravity) and the central column of the ship.

I am deeply skeptical that physics will allow for a successful implementation of this idea, but my approach to this is that if it CAN be done then it SHOULD be done, because there are so many advantages to an integrated design for this hardware.

Spacecraft have been rotating successfully for many decades ... In fact, the original/first successful United States satellite was spin stabilized (launched on a Redstone by Wernhner Von Braun et al).

However, ** this ** vessel will be much larger, and it will be filled with objects that are constantly in motion inside the spinning wheel. Instability is guaranteed, so dynamic stabilization measures will be required.

In addition, the question of how such a vehicle would be accelerated in space is completely unaddressed. A model spacecraft could be built, fitted with sensors of various kinds, and launched into space in a Smallsat venture. How to do ** that ** is another open question.

In any case, with your permission and (perhaps) watchful supervision, I will launch an initiative here to announce opportunities for volunteer opportunities to assist with the Large Ship project.

Postby tahanson43206 » Wed Jan 27, 2021 2:22 pm

The NewMars forum is a project of the Mars Society.

A member of the NewMars forum is a long time Mars Society member from Canada. He has undertaken design of a large rotating space vessel, capable of holding 1000 passengers and 60 crew for flights between Earth and Mars.

There are currently two openings for volunteer support of the Large Ship venture ...

The first is a request for an experienced chef, to assist in planning supplies, menus, equipment, staffing and management of an operation supporting 1000 passengers and 60 crew for up to two years.

A flight to Mars is planned to take under six months, but in case of a problem the ship can return to Earth on a well designed elliptical trajectory in a total elapsed time of two years. The launch from Earth must be assumed to last for two years without resupply. If all goes well, the ship will "dock" near Mars in under six months, and then return to Earth at a later time.

The second opportunity is for a mission trajectory planner ... One of the PhD level members of the forum is an experienced aerospace engineer, but he is a master of computing tools that were state-of-the-art in the 1970's. It would be helpful if someone with experience in planning missions for spacecraft travelling to Mars or other Solar System destinations, and with the appropriate software tools at hand, were to assist with planning flights of the Large Ship.

One of many challenges before the mission trajectory planning team is trying to find a solution that allows the Large Ship to "dock" (go into orbit) at Mars without a large expenditure of mass and energy, or without having to take the enormously risky path of trying to fly a passenger ship through the thin atmosphere of Mars to slow down.

While the project architect is willing to take that risk, there may be a trajectory solution that provides for meeting all the other objectives of the flight plan without a pass through the atmosphere.

If you are interested, the concept is for a participant to take responsibility for development of a virtual plot on Mars, one kilometer square on the surface, in a community called Sagan City (2018).
Participants will interact with each other to specialize in one or more of the knowledge areas which will be needed to sustain civilized life on Mars.

In addition, tahanson43206 is participating in a membership outreach campaign at NewMars forum. In an effort to build up a virtual business community focused upon Mars, messages are being send to newly registered members, inviting them to participate in the Hacienda topic.

In the past week, a variety of topics have been under discussion as usual.

The 2020 Mars Society Convention took place recently. There were 150 speakers, and 130 of the talks have been recorded as videos.

A discussion of the videos is underway in the NewMars.com/forums ... They are scheduled to change every two Earth days.

As of this posting, the video in review is Video #47. This video is a review of plans for a science center in Poland.
The next video, #48, is a panel discussion about the Chinese space program.

The NewMars forum Administrators have closed off registrations. More than 16,900 ID's are registered. The vast majority of these were created by Spam robots. A process is underway to prepare these fake ID's for use by real people. From now on (until policy changes again) admissions to the forum will be by invitation. Existing members are invited to nominate candidates. A mechanism for applying for membership is in use. (see below) As of 2021/01/18, the second By Invitation member was added to the roster.

If a reader of this post in The Knowledge Forum would have a nomination for a person being recruited at the NewMars forum, it is possible to communicate using the Signature line of the Registration Application record of this forum. No registrations are being accepted at this time, but I do check the latest registrations to see if they are from someone other than a spam artist.

There is an active search underway for a person who has many years of experience planning and supervising provisioning of a large cruise ship or miltary vessel. This person would assist RobertDyck in planning provisioning for the Large Ship to carry passengers in the Mars/Earth circuit.

Another volunteer opportunity would be for someone willing to help to plan space missions to Mars. There is an experienced (retired) aerospace engineer in the membership. A new member with interests along these lines would be welcome.

The most recent active discussion was about the potential of delivering supplies to Mars without parachutes. From this rather bold start, the discussion has progressed to a consideration of delivering bulk supplies to Phobos by taking advantage of the movement of Phobos around Mars, and the properties of the Hohmann transfer orbit. It appears to be possible to reduce the relative velocity of a vessel approaching Phobos to (about) 2 kilometers per second without mitigation. An ion engine fitted to a cargo pod during the Hohmann transfer may be able to reduce the relative velocity to a very low value upon arrival at Phobos.

The bulk delivery discussion is continuing.

There is a need for members to help with numerous ongoing or potential activities ...

The Large Ship project has requested help with meal planning and navigation.

There is a need for help with evaluating the physical properties of the Large Ship, and specifically issues relating to the design feature that the ship would rotate as a unit, without bearings between sections.

There is a need for several thousand individuals to take on the imaginary role of a settler, to develop an understanding of how a capitalist society might operate away from Earth, on Mars or anywhere else.

There is an opportunity for students who might wish to try to learn to become a spacecraft navigator to help a retired aerospace engineer/professor to develop a tutorial for that purpose, from the many years of documentation and procedures he has developed.

There is a discussion underway to see if the many materials prepared for computation of spacecraft orbital missions might be developed into a tutoral that would be open to anyone interested in learning how navigate a space craft.

There is a robust discussion underway of a Ballistic Package Delivery business opportunity for the Earth-Mars trade.

It appears that if a package is slowed to 450 meters/second by passage through the atmosphere of Mars, a significant range of valuable materials can be safely delivered to customers on the surface of Mars. They'll have to dig the packages out of the regolith, but otherwise it appears that a well design capsule can deliver up to 28 kilograms of useful material.

The latest wrinkle is the beginning of discussion of how to build a landing pad for Starships, using the Ballistic Delivery method to deliver supplies, combined with telepresence from an orbiting space craft, to perform the construction.

The latest wrinkle is the beginning of discussion of how to build a landing pad for Starships, using the Ballistic Delivery method to deliver supplies, combined with telepresence from an orbiting space craft, to perform the construction.

This past week a new topic has come into view. The US Defense Department reported a successful test of a small solar panel riding in the X37b experimental space platform. The background for this experiment was reported to be the Pentagon interest in providing power from space to remote military outposts, to reduce risks due to transport of petroleum in disputed territory.

The implications of this idea for civilian power service are under vigorous discussion. There is a class of satellite orbits which ride the dawn/dusk border around the Earth. These are a category of polar orbit that precesses at just the right rate to remain constantly in view of the Sun. Delivery of power from one of these satellites is available for about 30 minutes at least once a day for every location on Earth.

In addition, it appears that service may be possible twice a day, because every location on Earth is exposed to dawn once a day, and dusk 12 hours later. In addition, more than one satellite can ride in this orbit. For example, a satellite every degree of latitude is possible. And finally, there is no reason why a particular satellite in LEO is limited to serving just one location. There may be a practical limit, but service to 100 stations seems like a reasonable number to consider.

Thus, if all the possibilities are covered, we would have:

1) 3 30 minute charge opportunities per orbit (assuming 90 minute orbit)
2) 360 satellites so 1080 charge opportunities (assuming 1 customer per satellite)
3) 1080 * 100 or 10,800 charge opportunities assuming 100 customers per satellite

Each station should have enough energy storage capacity to hold a charge of 30 minutes for distribution over 24 hours.

*** This is the Help Wanted topic so I'll add current needs:

1) Master chef to help plan meals for the Large ship (Mars/Earth service)
2) Engineers of various disciplines to help with design and testing of Large Ship
3) Engineers of various disciplines to help with Ballistic Delivery of non-perishable supplies to Mars
4) Engineers of various disciplines to help to work through preliminary design of an SPS in LEO system
5) There are many other volunteer opportunities to help to prepare a Normandy Invasion style approach to settlement of Mars

There is a discussion underway to see if the many materials prepared for computation of spacecraft orbital missions might be developed into a tutoral that would be open to anyone interested in learning how navigate a space craft.

The US Defense Department reported a successful test of a small solar panel riding in the X37b experimental space platform. The background for this experiment was reported to be the Pentagon interest in providing power from space to remote military outposts, to reduce risks due to transport of petroleum in disputed territory.

The progress of SpaceX in developing the Starship is a popular subject for discussion.

Since this is the Help Wanted (volunteer) topic ...

1) Experienced chef to plan meals for Large Ship
2) Engineers of many kinds to help with design and testing of Large Ship vision
3) Engineers to help with developing Ballistic Delivery business concept

etc.

This is the subreddit of the Living Universe Foundation. Our dream is to see humanity take life to the stars.

In NewMars.com (forum) there is a post which is following Mars around the Sun. New Years on Mars occurred on Earth day 2019/03/24. Mars has passed longitude 180 degrees in its stately progression. The calendar is now on Sol 383 or later.

The 2020 Mars Society Convention took place in the fall of 2020. There were 150 speakers, and 130 of the talks have been recorded as videos.

A discussion of the videos is underway in the NewMars.com/forums ... They are scheduled to change every two Earth days.

As of this posting, the video in review is Video #66.

The NewMars forum Administrators have closed off registrations. More than 18,877 ID's are registered. The vast majority of these were created by Spam robots. A process is underway to prepare these fake ID's for use by real people. From now on (until policy changes again) admissions to the forum will be by invitation. Existing members are invited to nominate candidates. A mechanism for applying for membership is in use. (see below) As of 2021/03/13, the third By Invitation member was added to the roster.

In recent times a science fiction writer brought ideas for laser boosted sailing in space for discussion. The topic created for a trip to Proxima Centauri seems to have concluded that a laser boosted flight to the nearest star system is practical with known technology. Slowing the starship (or an unmanned probe) would require advances in nuclear fission production, since fusion power systems are not yet available.

The discussion of the interstellar trip naturally flowed into the prospect of a scaled down version of the same technology facilitating faster trips to and from Mars.

**** Since this is the Help Wanted topic, I'll add that there are number of volunteer opportunities recently posted in the Recruiting topic at NewMars.org/forums.

A new member is about to start a topic on Design of Settlements. A lot of work has already been done, and there are active projects around the world. The topic ** should ** have some growth potential.
