Update on Tuesday 2023/07/18 at 13:32 local time ... kbd512 has received the keys to the NewMars web site. He reports that he is working the problem.
The web site is failing to start. The cause is currently a mystery. kbd512 is building a complete test web site on his own equipment to refresh his knowledge of the software.
There have been a number of updates since he last worked with the software.

Update at 2023/07/18 at 12:04 UTC - a volunteer is negotiating with Mars Society to assist with WebMaster duties.

Update 2023/07/17 at 20:00 UTC ....

The Executive Director of Mars Society has provided access to the NewMars leadership team to use the Professional Zoom account. That should improve reliability of communication during the present emergency.

Today's calendar update: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=2189&p=4728#p4728

The Mars Society web sites went down in the week of July 9-15, and while the main site was restored, NewMars.com/forums was not.

In the short term, the leadership team and a few active members are keeping in touch by email.

Zoom meetings will be scheduled. In addition to email invitation, this web site (and this topic in particular) can serve as a point of coordination.

Link to next Zoom meeting at ... time to be provided

The Meeting ID is .... to be provided
Passcode is: ... to be provided

The setup steps completed included:

1) Start Chromebook and log into NewMars account

This is a copy of the Topic post, for the record...

tahanson43206 wrote:This topic is set up to assist members of the (former) NewMars.com/forums web site.

The Mars Society web sites went down in the week of July 9-15, and while the main site was restored, NewMars.com/forums was not.

In the short term, the leadership team and a few active members are keeping in touch by email.

It is possible the members will decide to meet via Zoom. If that happens, this web site (and this topic in particular) can serve as a point of coordination.

Link to today's Zoom meeting at midnight UTC: Update at 23:05 UTC ... A Zoom session should start in 55 minutes, if all goes well.

The Meeting ID is (removed for security reasons)
Passcode is: (expired)

The meeting is started and the login code verified. At 4 minutes after the hour, we have no one else connected.\
The meeting is set up with a waiting room, and if anyone requests admission they will be admitted immediately.

Update at 20:33 local time ... Zoom just sent a warning that the free meeting will expire in 10 minutes. That's going to be a problem if we stay with the free version.
On the ** other ** hand, Mars Society might be willing to grant us us of their professional account once again.

Updating at 20:31 ... the countdown clock shows less than one minute remaining for the free session ... This free Zoom meeting has ended.

If we had a meeting in progress we could start another session.

As things stand, I'll close the session for this evening.

The setup steps completed included:

1) Start Chromebook and log into NewMars account
2) Start Zoom and log in as a member (NewMars)
3) Schedule a meeting
4) Start the meeting
5) Publish ID and Passcode on Knowledge Forum

it turned out that kbd512 had started a Zoom session at the same time on another ID.

Update Tuesday evening ...

From kbd512:

Tom,

That's the plan, but I'm going to use the latest version of PHP, make whatever minor edits to the PHP code are required, and see if that works. If it does, then we'll be running on the latest version of PHP, Apache HTTP Server, and MySQL Server Community Edition. Our software configuration is then more supportable, and hopefully has fewer code and security issues, but we'll have to evaluate that through testing. That only leaves us with older / unsupported forum software, but updated to the point that it runs on the latest stable release of all required software. Tonight's first task is to install / create the database objects using my experimental version of the fluxBB forum software (only code changes made thus far are getting rid of deprecated syntax for arrays). I stopped last night after I installed and configured the MySQL database server.

Thanks,
Brian

Re: NewMars.com/forums Zoom Meetings

Postby tahanson43206 » Wed Jul 19, 2023 2:58 pm

From kbd512:

All,

I can see the error messages all over the log files- hundreds if not thousands of the same error message reported in the Apache HTTP Server logs by the first PHP file executed on the server. It's the same error that I encountered on my version of fluxBB before I fixed my copy of the fluxBB PHP code. I'm using a PHP version that is at or after 7.4. The people who created fluxBB or last modified it, used curly braces here and there (not always, but sometimes) to address array elements in their PHP files. In PHP 7.4 and later, curly braces "$my_array{0}" are not permitted to be used to address array elements in PHP code. The fix is as simple as changing the PHP code from "$my_array{0}" to "$my_array[0]". The latter syntax for addressing an array element is exactly what the syntax looks like for addressing array elements in JavaScript, minus the dollar sign prefix used by PHP to indicate that the identifier is a variable.

On my Apache HTTP Server, every PHP file containing this deprecated array syntax absolutely will fail to execute as soon as the PHP interpreter hits that line of code, so PHP then throws an error message. Said error message will not necessarily generate a valid HTTP response after execution fails. Sometimes it will generate an error sent through to the client's browser as a HTTP response from the web server, and sometimes won't, but the log file tells the story like it is. In point of fact, this is the error message I see in the log files on the server. It is possible to use multiple versions of PHP on the same machine, but I don't think that's what we're doing. In point of fact, I know that's not what we're doing, because we're seeing these error messages in the web server log files.

This is what the following command returns on the server:
Command: php --version
PHP 7.4.30 (cli) (built: Sep 13 2022 05:02:03) ( NTS )
Copyright (c) The PHP Group
Zend Engine v3.4.0, Copyright (c) Zend Technologies
with Zend OPcache v7.4.30, Copyright (c), by Zend Technologies

This is the very first fatal error message I received after I attempted to load / bring up fluxBB on my server using the latest version of PHP:
Commands to view logged PHP fatal errors (logged by Apache HTTP Server):
cd /home/newmars/logs/newmars.com
vi error.log
[Tue Jul 18 00:27:02.173625 2023] [fcgid:warn] [pid 561895:tid 140042736293632] [client 195.191.219.133:46832] mod_fcgid: stderr: PHP Fatal error: Array and string offset access syntax with curly braces is no longer supported in /home/newmars/newmars.com/forums/include/functions.php on line 1806

From functions.php
//
// Fetch a list of available styles
//
function forum_list_styles()
{
$styles = array();

$d = dir(PUN_ROOT.'style');
while (($entry = $d->read()) !== false)
{
if ($entry{0} == '.')
continue;

if (substr($entry, -4) == '.css')
$styles[] = substr($entry, 0, -4);
}
$d->close();

natcasesort($styles);

return $styles;
}

"$entry{0}" should be changed to "$entry[0]". After you do that, then it will fail in a different place or totally different file. When that happens, you find and fix the next instance of deprecated array addressing syntax, until you've corrected them all. The Apache web server logs will let you know, even if the web browser doesn't. If we absolutely have to, then we'll enable extra logging in PHP, but thus far I haven't had to do that. I learn about which files have "bad syntax" by visiting them on my web server. For most of these files, you can search and replace using a regular expression.

Bottom line is this:
I fixed it in my copy of fluxBB by fixing the deprecated array addressing syntax in the fluxBB PHP files so the latest versions of PHP don't throw fatal errors.
The alternative is reverting back to a version of PHP before 7.4.
Our tertiary option is running multiple copies of PHP and configuring environment variables appropriately so that the other web apps running on the same server are not adversely affected. I don't like this option, but I'll do it, if required.

I'm going to tell Mr Burk what I found and see if he's okay with me fixing the files in-place. I'll make backup copies before I edit them. I'm also going to ask if PHP was recently updated to serve the needs of some other web apps we have running on that server.

Thanks,
Brian
