Dr. Dartnell, if you are reading this, here's a chapter suggestion for subsequent editions of The Knowledge:

During the grace period, there will be a vast number of circuit boards, bristling with electronic components. With a relatively basic understanding of circuitry, a large number of electronic devices and control mechanisms can be fabricated with parts scavenged from everyday consumer items. Especially from those slightly older models which had not yet gone digital. Topics might include scavenging / improvising and fabricating solder, flux and soldering irons (the older ones were merely heated sinks).

Washers and dryers, stoves, toasters, coffee drip pots, TVs, automobiles, PV array and control systems and so on are just the tip of the iceberg. Such projects as LED circuitry, voltage regulation, alarms, timing devices, activators, etc. are all useful things for the Grace Period.

An Electronics chapter with scavenged parts in mind would, I think, would be of great interest! Might make a book of its own.
