23 + 16 > 39 years later, my guess and hope is that the greater part if not most of this material will prove to be just as useful for planning Lunar and Mars habitats as they were when created.

Much new knowledge is available about both potential sites for human habitation, and vigorous efforts are underway by multiple nations to reach both destinations.

This topic remains as critical as ever for off-Earth habitation, but it seems to me that it is increasingly pertinent for on-Earth application. In densely populated urban settings, it appears that it may prove economical to grow fresh vegetables in vertical structures with artificial lighting and minimal or no soil. The challenge for practitioners is to learn how to grow plants which require greater amounts of the appropriate spectra of light than is feasible with today's hardware. Whatever is learned for on-Earth application will presumably be helpful for off-Earth application, but (it seems to me) producing plants indoors in economic competition with factory farms in the open would be especially beneficial for off-Earth application.

2016/11/28 On the morning after this day in 1519, the Magellan expedition saw land on the West side of the Atlantic.

Per Reference #1, Page lx:
Begin Quotation:
29 November 1519: The fleet reaches Cabo Santo Agostinho at latitude 8 degrees 21 minutes South, now Cabo Bronco, to the north of Recife (46).
End Quotation.

Google Map gives the location of Recife as: 8.0475622!4d-34.8769643

Google Earth gives the location of Cabo Branco as 7 degrees 7 minutes 30.67 seconds South and 34 degrees 49 minutes 23.59 seconds West

I deduce the expedition kept the coast in sight as they proceeded South to Rio de Janeiro

Update 2016/12/14 ... The Magellan Expedition of 1519 was and is intended to serve as a framework for a three year study of the books cited as references in the original post.
The post which is following the expedition serves as the anchor for a set of weekly posts, and this week I will attempt to inaugurate a train of messages, with this one serving as the locomotive.

2016/12/14 Reference #2

Finney and Jones: chapter 1

Page 15, Paragraph 1

As quoted in the post for 2016/10/12, the authors open the chapter with a reminder of the exploring nature of the human species.

My observation on 2016/10/12 was that the impulse to explore has not been equally evident across the population, and indeed, it would seem that contentment with the local neighborhood would be advantageous for a population of a habitat moving slowly away from Earth.

It has been proposed by some that if communities set off in slow habitats on journeys away from Earth and from the Solar System, that they would be overtaken later on by vehicles able to travel at greater speeds, and by implication, that the slow journeys should not have been undertaken.

I consider such reasoning to be superficial at best. A city in a continent on Earth does not cease to be relevant because a visitor arrives by jet plane instead of by ox cart. My expectation is that each mobile community will build up knowledge and capability over time, as digital communications facilitates exchanges of economic value between the habitats and the Earth and each other. If fast transportation becomes available at some point, the slowly moving habitats will no doubt become destinations for some, as well as departure points for others who may have been born and raised inside the enclosed environments.

Indeed, I can easily imagine growth of intra-habitat transportation systems, to answer the desire of young people in particular, to venture out away from home. There will more than likely arise specializations of knowledge or technology or culture that will attract talented young people, so the ability to physically move between habitats would help to answer the need of some to get away from the familiar home environment.

A consideration that might influence the degree of movement between habitats, or indeed, between the Earth (assuming fast transportation) and habitats, is the risk of biological agents. Even on Earth, in the 21st century, we are facing great risks as biological agents which have developed in isolation in remote parts of the planet, come into the range of movement of human beings who have no natural resistance to them. Thus, I would expect strong and rigorous enforcement of quarantine policies as time goes on.

A high speed transport from Earth, for example, might find that visits between passengers and the habitat dwellers would be mediated by thick glass walls, or even more likely, use of virtual reality systems to simulate direct interactions.

Finney and Jones close this paragraph with a reference, once again, to the "explorer's bent" that is "leading us to the stars".

Kim Stanley Robinson points out in "Aurora" that those who are born in a habitat after it has begun its journey from Earth may very well NOT share the impulse of the original passengers to undertake the voyage into the unknown. Such persons will find themselves unwiting participants in the grand adventure, and some of them may find themselves longing to escape. For such persons, the option of travelling to another habitat, or even back to Earth if technology allows at some point, would be psychologically beneficial to the individuals, and ultimately, to the respective communities.

2016/12/17 Reference #4, Page 7

“Aurora” is a novel, and scenarios appear both for dramatic effect in the immediate situation, and to build toward later appearances.

On Page 7, Mr. Robinson introduces the idea that there might be a “feed from Earth”.

The presentation seems dismissive to me, because there is no hint of two way traffic between the moving habitat and the Earth, and the images on the screen are described as
“busy little figures”.

In 2016, it is rare for a television display to show “busy little figures”.

Modern flat screen television and computer screens allow for detailed presentation of life sized figures, and my sense of most video production is that such full sized images are quite common.

From a dramatic stand point, I can imagine that it would serve Mr. Robinson's purpose to set his characters in an environment which is isolated from Earth, and indeed, if digital communication with Earth should fail for some reason, then the population of a moving habitat might indeed feel isolated.

However, since my purpose in moving the Magellan thread along, is to find topics for consideration in planning a successful community located away from Earth, I accept Mr. Robinson's scenario as a starting point, showing what NOT to do.

Isolation need not occur if provisions are made to counter it.

The scenario with which “Aurora” opens places the ship about 10 light years away from Earth, after passage of about 100 years (six generations of passengers are described as having been born).

Taking work by Edward M. Lerner as a guide, it seems to me quite feasible to plan for a vibrant two-way digital communication exchange between the Earth and any other habitats that may exist away from Earth.

While there may be a large library of historical information available in local stores, it seems to me that new information will be constantly pouring out of the Earth and if the remote habitats are successful, such flows will be coming from them as well.
