This is the subreddit of the Living Universe Foundation. Our dream is to see humanity take life to the stars.

In NewMars.com (forum) there is a post which is following Mars around the Sun. New Years on Mars occurred on Earth day 2019/03/24. Mars has passed longitude 180 degrees in its stately progression. The calendar is now on Sol 383 or later.

If you are interested, the concept is for a participant to take responsibility for development of a virtual plot on Mars, one kilometer square on the surface, in a community called Sagan City (2018).
Participants will interact with each other to specialize in one or more of the knowledge areas which will be needed to sustain civilized life on Mars.

In addition, tahanson43206 is participating in a membership outreach campaign at NewMars forum. In an effort to build up a virtual business community focused upon Mars, messages are being send to newly registered members, inviting them to participate in the Hacienda topic.

A new branch of the My Hacienda topic is open, in addition to the previously reported Devon Island branch. This new branch considers an implementation of Sagan City (2018) on an island in Norway. This island is inhabited, and international arctic research stations are already encouraged by the government.

In the past week, a variety of topics have been under discussion as usual.

Work is completed on design of a piece of hardware to sit between loops of Kevlar Thread, in a chain concept for a tether at Mars. Models of the Cushion Guide are shown in various stages of development at Shapeways.com. Two full version of the model was 3D printed by a contractor in Cleveland. The full version of the Cushion Guide has been rebuilt in Fusion 360, and (apparently successfully) uploaded to Shapeways. An earlier model (719) has passed through the printing process at Shapeways and is in transit to a review station. A revised model (727) will be submitted for printing soon.

Work is progressing on a program to calculate the number of links that would be required to build a chain of Kevlar thread from a point above the surface of Mars to the orbit of Phobos. The program will compute the number of threads needed to hold each Cushion Guide in the chain. Output will include the number of Cushion Guides required, and the number of kilometers of Kevlar thread needed to complete the chain. Each #92 Kevlar thread can hold 13 kilograms.

Several members have been thinking about the Starship vehicles in design by SpaceX might be used to accomplish various space exploration and settlement missions.

Meanwhile, a member who goes by RobertDyck has undertaken conceptualization of a large scale passenger ship that could travel to Mars.

The forum was joined recently by a new member who appears to have the ability to deliver hard numbers to the various discussions. The ability to work with hard numbers is rare in the forum membership, and it is most welcome.

Discussion took off in a new/old direction in the past week ... the new member suggested trying to build a cable based transportation system on Mars, and several older members contributed to the discussion. The major new element added to the discussion (by the new member (SeaDragon) was the idea of making pylons out of frozen Mars regolith.

Such pylons would need to be protected from daytime heating near the equator during Mars summer, but the mean temperature at the surface of Mars is -81 degrees Fahrenheit (per mars.nasa.gov), so the pylons should be able to hold form reasonable well over the course of a Marian year.

Update 2020/08/07 A NewMars member going by kbd512 came up with an idea/suggestion for a deep space vehicle that I have not seen before, and that I think is worth exploring a bit.

The idea is to build rotating habitat disks that rotate in opposite directions, like the propellers of helicopters designed with counter rotating blade disks.

The unique aspect of kbd512's concept is to use the Startrek Enterprise saucer design for the rotating habitats.

Engineering challenges to design such a passenger carrying vessel would be significant. Navigation of such a vessel would be challenging as well, although counter rotation of the habitat sections would presumably help, the forces at work at the hubs would be severe if thrust is not applied carefully.

*** Update 2020/08/09 ... discussion of the Startrek(like) vision of kbd512 has stimulated discussion leading to an interesting concept not published elsewhere, to the best of my knowledge.

A member posted a link to a Physics instructional video about gyroscopes. This lead to the realization that a very efficient design for a spinning habitat with a non-spinning propulsion/navigation unit is possible.

Whereas a gyroscope used for position sensing in an aircraft has three circular housings that are at 90 degrees with respect to each other, a space vehicle would need only one ring, and only half of a ring at that.

A 3D Printer model showing what this spacecraft design might look like has been published on NewMars forum.

Update 2020/08/17: A friendly competition is developing between RobertDyck and tahanson43206 for design of an interplanetary space craft able to carry substantial numbers of passengers while providing 1 g of simulated gravity, protection from radiation (especially Solar flares), and a level of comfort for passengers comparable to a first class cruise ship on earth.

The two visions differ in so many ways that their development in the months ahead should be interesting to follow.

Update 2020/08/22: A 3D Printer model of the rotor of a proposed "Big Wheel Gyroscope Passenger Transport" is available for viewing at Shapeways.com, in the shop set up for tahanson43206.

The dimensions of the rotor are defined by physics. The number of cradles for SpaceX Starships is under review.

The version available for viewing has 66 ports, arranged in rings of 36, 18 and 12. Because actual Starships will have appendages such as steering fins, the ports need to be larger. A revised design is under consideration that would offer 18 ports in the outer ring, while retaining 18 and 12 inside. The total complement would then be 48, which would represent a population of 4800 people if 100 passengers and crew are booked into each Starship.

The design allows for as few as two Starships to be loaded. Since the rotor must be precisely balanced, the number of Starships assigned to berths in the structure will be determined by load calculations.

The dimensions of the rotor are defined by physics. The number of cradles for SpaceX Starships is reduced to 48.

The total complement is now 48, which would represent a population of 4800 people if 100 passengers and crew are booked into each Starship. However, the vessel will be large enough to accommodate passengers and crew who are not part of the Starship complement.

The design allows for as few as two Starships to be loaded. Since the rotor must be precisely balanced, the number of Starships assigned to berths in the structure will be determined by load calculations.

As of 2020/08/28, a second initiative is underway. This interplanetary ship design is more modest, but event this smaller vessel is in design to carry up to 1000 passengers and crew. The discussion of this vessel design is under way in the NewMars.com/forums Large Ship topic.

There is a post that sets out the kind of customer for which the member is designing the vessel.

In addition, there is a post in which the member re-asserts his faith that slowing the vessel by plowing through the atmosphere at Mars is a good idea. This view is not held by others in the forum, one of whom has patiently and repeatedly laid out reasons why this idea is extraordinarily risk for a vessel filled with human beings.

There is a new discussion under way, starting with the California/Oregon/Washington wild fires, and wrapping around to show how a shelter designed for Mars could be designed (with modification) to serve as a family shelter on Earth.

Temperatures of 375 degrees were observed by NASA at some of the fire locations in California. A fire shelter would need to be designed to withstand such temperatures, and to protect some number of humans and pets for as much as a week. Such a shelter would clean and recycle the air. It would employ the Earth itself as a heat sink, to maintain comfortable conditions inside the shelter.

As the discussion continued, it became apparent that the situation of survival for persons caught in a regional fire are quite similar to those of persons travelling in an interplanetary space vessel for two years, and those of persons living on Mars.

The threats are different, but the needs of the humans are almost identical.

All supplies must be locally available throughout the time period to be survived.

Heat must be managed. In the case of a fire shelter, a large heat sink is needed. In the case of Space, heat must be managed between extremes of high and low temperatures, and on Mars, heat must be maintained against the low temperature of the planet.

Energy must be provided locally in all three situations, for lighting, cooking, communications and entertainment.

External sourcing of energy may be available in all three situations, but it cannot be relied upon.

Discussion of a design for an Interplanetary Transport for the Earth/Mars circuit continues.

A graphic image of the layout of the interior rim of a proposed vessel is on display. It shows allocation of space in the rim to 248 cabins, distributed evenly over the interior space, which is 19 meters wide and 238 meters in length.

The cabins are grouped in four sets, with space between available for services such as dining, recreation, services and whatever else is needed to accommodate the guests.

While a trip to Mars can be expected to take six to eight months, it is necessary to plan for a voyage of two years in the event there is a wave-off at Mars. The trajectory of the vessel will be planned from launch at Earth Orbit, to return to Earth in two years without further propulsion.

This means that all supplies needed to insure the comfort of the passengers must be loaded before launch.

There is some consideration being given to growing crops en route. Among the benefits of a robost greenhouse capability is recovery of oxygen from the carbon dioxide produced by the passengers as they go about their lives.

A two year voyage in a confined space such as the one proposed for this vessel will require careful planning for psychological health.

A graphic image of a science fiction movie design for a ship that is remarkably similar to the Circle Y ship under discussion. The image shows a set of girders that allow for transfer of force from the propulsion unit in the central shaft to the rotating ring.

A recent post suggested a way to handle solid and liquid toilet waste by saving it in containers designed for the purpose, and delivering it to Mars for use in conditioning soil. This is a recommendation that is likely to be adopted. The practice has been followed on Earth for thousands of years.

A two year voyage in a confined space such as the one proposed for this vessel will require careful planning for psychological health.

It was recently proposed that the ship design be implemented first as a test article in orbit around Earth, so that a "live" test could be carried out to see if 1060 people could handle life in a ship of the specified size for two years.
